In good time for International Migrants Day on 18 December the city's Health Department and the Department of Migration and Integration have published the fourth edition of their brochure which lists doctors in Leipzig who speak foreign languages. The brochure now contains around 140 entries.
In 30 languages
The list covers doctors in a number of specialisations, ranging from general practitioners to dentists and psychotherapists, together with selected health-related advisory bodies in Leipzig. Altogether nearly 30 different languages are to be found, with most medical practitioners speaking English or Russian.
Dr. Regine Krause-Döring, Director of the Health Department, points out that the brochure makes an important contribution to improving the preventive medical care, advice and treatment available to migrants.
This is confirmed by Stojan Gugutschkow, the city's Migrant Officer. He says that in his work he regularly finds that language barriers, the cultural and country-specific differences in health systems or diverging perceptions of illness often prevent migrants from making appropriate use of the available facilities for preventative medicine and medical treatment.
The guide to health facilities for migrants is available from the Municipal Health Department (including branch offices), the Department of Migration und Integration, and advice centres for migrants.
