Beginning – the promise of a future

The Faculty of Sports Science of the University of Leipzig was founded on 8th December 1993. "In a difficult economic and financial phase in its history, Saxony has decided to create a faculty which will be among the best institutions of sports science in Germany," said Saxony's minister for Arts and Sciences during the inauguration festivities. "But in view of what we want to achieve this is only a beginning – but we also hope that it is the promise of a future." The foundation of the new faculty was a result of the decision by the Saxon government almost three years earlier on the very day to close down the former East German sports university Deutsche Hochschule für Körperkultur und Sport, DHfK.
