400 sports facilities under city council management

The variety of Leipzig's traditional sports scene has changed considerably, particularly during the last ten years. Presently, there exist more than 300 associations and federations dedicated to 78 disciplines. Leipzig boasts sports facilities in all districts of the city, about 400 in total. Of these, the Office for Sports and Public Sport Facilities of the City Council manages the following, mostly in cooperation with the associations: 2 stadiums, 64 sports grounds, 54 gyms (in 32 locations), 11 indoor swimming pools, 10 outdoor swimming pools, 1 tennis hall (4 courts), 14 water sports facilities, 21 bowling facilities, and 14 special facilities (e.g. cycle race course, shooting venue, motodrome). Moreover, the city's School Administration Office is responsible for 131 school gyms, which are also open to the associations after school.

Consequently, any sports enthusiast will find suitable facilities in many locations. In addition to the facilities mentioned above, the Faculty of Sports Science runs its own facilities including a swimming pool, a large-pitch hall, and many smaller halls and gyms. Although these facilities are generally reserved to the students of sports, they can be used by students of other faculties and by sportsmen and women from Leipzig's associations. Privately-run facilities complement these publicly managed venues. One of the most attractive among them is "Sachsen-Therme" in Paunsdorf, including pools and sauna. Add to this the many fitness studios.
