Event Offerings Surrounding the 9th of October

The events offered on and around the commemorative day, the 9th of October definitely grew in both quantity and quality between 1997 and 2008. The program consisted of eight events in 1997 and had doubled to twice that many in 2008.

In the last years, important memorial events have found a fixed place in the people of Leipzig’s’ event calendars and consciousnesses:

• “Speech on Democracy” – since 2001 in the Nikolai church
  
• A symposium of contemporary affairs – since 2000 in the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig
  
• Awarding of the ‘”Prize for Freedom and Future in the Media” – awarded since 2007 by the Media Foundation of the Sparkasse Leipzig
  
• “The Night of Candles” – since 2007 at the Nikolai church
  
• Film night - since 2002 in the Museum in der „Runden Ecke” (round corner)
  

A large number of non-annual events, however, belong to the range of commemorative events as well: concerts, forums and exhibitions in various locations, the inauguration of monuments (1999 -commemorative plaque on the “Round Corner” and the Nikolai column, 2003 – light installation at the Nikolai church, 2009 – the Freedom Bell in the Grimmaische Street), the awarding of the Medal of Honor from the city of Leipzig, the Conference of Leipzig’s Partner Cities and, not least of all, the opening of the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig (Forum for Contemporary History).
