International Conference: "Democracy in the 21st Century"
The 9th of October, 1989 represents a special political obligation to the city of Leipzig. For this reason, an international conference dedicated to “democracy in the 21st century” took place between the 22nd and 24th of October, 2009. The aim was to draw a critical balance and to show a realistic and sober yet constructive view of the future.
Creating an Audience for the Voice of Democracy, Nonviolence and Critique
Renowned guests from politics, science and society discussed the urgent questions surrounding democracy and civil society in a series of panel discussions, lectures and workshops.
A long list of questions was asked:
Which hopes and dreams drove the upheaval in Europe?
Which expectations have been met
Which dreams have been left unfulfilled?
Which demands are still waiting to be realized?
How has democracy been met and integrated into the lives of the people?
Consideration and discussion of the state of democracy on a global scale was long overdue. Because of globalization, new political, economic and ideological power structures are being created. It has proven difficult to obtain them with the proven methods of political participation and it seems to be even more difficult to control them but exactly this is the original democratic demand.
