State Ceremony for the 20th Anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution |
For the 20th anniversary of the peaceful revolution, a joint ceremony was held by the Saxonian state government, the Saxonian parliament, and the city of Leipzig. It honored the peaceful revolution as an event of peaceful and democratic action by all of Saxony’s citizens.
The ceremony was the central event of the various celebrations taking place around the 20 year anniversary of the peaceful revolution in Saxony. Speeches were held by Horst Köhler - Germany’s federal president, the minister president of Saxony Stanislaw Tillich, president of the Saxonian Parliament Matthias Rößler and Leipzig’s mayor Burkhard Jung.
Alongside high ranking members of society, witnesses to the autumn of ‘89, civil rights activists and representatives of democratic grass roots initiatives took part in the celebration. The ceremony was also broadcast on public television. |
