Prayers for Peace

Peace-, environmental- and human rights groups had been organizing regular prayers for peace meetings in the Nikolai church since 1982. This was the origin of the Monday demonstrations which began in September of 1989. After the Monday prayers on the 9th of October, 70,000 people gathered to demonstrate. The traditional prayer for peace also took place in 2009 to commemorate this happening.

For the 20th anniversary of the peaceful revolution Bishop i. R. Dr. Christoph Kähler held a sermon with the motto “Blessed Be the Peacemakers for they Shall be the Children of God”. Jürgen Wolf conducted the premiere of “The Beatitudes – in Memorium Leipzig 1989” cantata for mixed choir, string trio, bassoon and organ by Enjott Schneider with the Bach Choir in the Nikolai Church.
