The city's location at the crossing of two continental trade routes catalysed the rise of the Leipzig Fair more than 800 years ago. Nowadays, at the dawn of the 21st century, roads, railways and air routes are all being improved to meet future needs and to tap the enormous potential Leipzig can mobilise within the expanded European Union.
