The city-centre railway tunnel is the most important transport construction project in central Germany. It will close the gap on the north–south axis between the historically evolved railway terminuses Hauptbahnhof (Leipzig Central Station) and Bayersicher Bahnhof (Bavarian Station) and speed up direct links to and from the city centre from neighbouring towns and countryside in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
