Focal Spaces of Urban Development

The generalized map "Schwerpunkträume der Stadtentwicklung" (Focal Spaces of Urban Development) was obtained from an overlay and summary of the central statements of the thematic maps of settlement development, development of green and open spaces, public space, and traffic development. Here, one can clearly see the spatial context of urban development and the focal points after 1990. These include:

• the development strip along the A 14 (motorway) in the north of the city, which integrates "new working environments" in a "landscape area of a new type",
  
• the "urban core" with the city center and the suburbs in Wilhelminian style.
  
• the adjacent focal spaces of urban renewal and urban reconstruction in the east and in the west,
  
• selected conversion areas,
  
• those urban spaces in which educational and research institutions are concentrated,
  
• the "green and blue belts" passing through the city,
  
• the newly developed and developing lake and recreation area in the south of the city.
