2 - Leipzig Central Station

With 26 platforms, Leipzig Central Station is one of the largest terminal stations, and one of the largest passenger-railway stations in Europe.

It was opened in 1915, replacing several small stations.

After finishing modernization in 1998, Leipzig Central Station is one of Germany's most modern stations, and also houses a shopping and service centre. The centre covers about 30,000 m2 on three levels with about 140 shops. There are two multi-storey car parks: The East and West Central Station Promenades multi-storey car parks, of which one is directly integrated.

Construction of Leipzig's City Tunnel began in 2003. The tunnel will be used for suburban, regional and long-distance connections, and will feature underground stations at the Central Station, the Market Square, Wilhelm Leuschner Platz, and the Bavarian Railway Station. In addition to shortening travel times between the city centre, Airport and the Leipzig New Fair exhibition centre, the tunnel will speed up rail links with Chemnitz, Hof, Zwickau and Dresden, and improve connections between northern and southern Germany. It is currently scheduled for completion in 2009.

The stations forecourt holds the important position of being the focus point of all transport systems as well as being the gate to the city. Most street trams and many bus routes converge in front of the impressive building.
