Katharinenstrasse is situated between Market Square and Brühl. A few baroque public halls such as the Frege House and the Romanus House are still to be found here.
The Romanus House on the corner of Brühl/Katharinenstrasse is one of the major examples of Baroque architecture in Leipzig. This city palace was built for Mayor Romanus by Johann Gregor Fuchs between 1701 and 1704. The building of the Romanus House marked the beginning of the heyday of bourgeois Baroque and following its example, almost every third house was newly built or converted in the style of the time.
The Frege House belonged to one of the wealthiest merchant families in Leipzig. The way it is to be seen today is thanks to the renovations of Johann Gregor Fuchs in 1706. Today it houses city facilities and a gallery.
