Up until the Second World War, Brühl was known world wide as being a centre for the fur and tobacco trade. A few houses in Nikolaistrasse bear witness to its former glory. The story of Old Brühl itself takes pride of place in the Museum of City History.
At Brühl 52 on the corner of Nikolaistrasse there is "Gloecks Haus" built by Paul Burkhardt between 1909 and 1910. The facade is made completely of shell limestone and decorated with statues of peoples from all the continents - a symbol of the former trading house's international relations.
