Only a few steps away from Gohlis Palace you can see Schiller House, which was Schiller's summer residence during 1785. It is also the oldest literary memorial site in Germany. From May to September 1785, Friedrich Schiller lived in this house belonging to a farmer by the name of Schneider in the former village of Gohlis. The house, built in 1717, has a triple sided courtyard and a lounge with adjacent bed chamber in the upper floor.
The exhibition in the Schiller House brings to life the atmosphere and personalities of the time who the poet met with or had won his friendship. It dedicates itself to the literary works of Schiller as well as to the performances of these works by Leipzig's theatre companies. Examples of these, among others, are the dramas "Cabal and Love", "Don Carlos" as well as the "Ode to Joy", to which Beethoven gave its world renowned soundtrack.
