In 1497 Leipzig was chosen as trade fair city, when the German Kaiser Maximilian I awarded Leipzig the imperial trade fair privilege (renewed in 1507). This turned Leipzig into the oldest trade fair city as well as an internationally renowned point of attraction for trade and visitors.
Since the middle of 1996 the city has had a new fair exhibition centre. The planning and building took five years and in which 700 million euros was invested. The Leipzig New Fair exhibition centre has five joined exhibition halls with a gross ground surface of 20,500 m2 as well as a glass hall which is the heart of the fair exhibition's grounds.
