It traditionally begins with the 44th New Year's Run with a circuit through the city centre. With the Feuerwerk der Turnkunst (16 January, Arena Leipzig), the 22nd Partner Pferd (17 - 20. January, Leipziger Messe) and the 66th German Indoor Athletics Championships (16/17 February), the indoor season is full of interesting events.
A particular highlight for 2019 is the Volleyball Nations League. It takes place from 28-30 June and brings top-class volleyball back to the trade fair city in 2019.
"A full and varied calendar of events like 2019 is only made possible with the cooperation of sports associations, sports clubs and the City of Leipzig," stresses Mayor for Sports, Heiko Rosenthal. "Sport in Leipzig is again a defining feature of our city in 2019. Participants will be battling for places and medals in numerous national and international competitions.
The other major sporting events are the Canoe Slalom World Cup at Kanupark, the German Fencing Championships, the 43rd Leipzig Marathon, the 16th Neuseen Classics, the 26th Sparkassen-Lipsiade, the 36th Leipzig Triathlon, the 11th Sachsenbeach, the Leipzig Open 2019 and the 8th Saxony Blind Football Cup.
Sport Promotion
In 2019, almost 2.8 million euros is allocated for the local promotion of sport. Project funds of approximately 940,000 euros are earmarked for local grassroots sport. This will support more than 100 tournaments, championships and series events at sports clubs and trade associations. Almost 1.4 million euros is available as institutional funding for grants for child and youth work at clubs, for volunteer instructors and for the city sports association.The support of the main junior sports across various clubs with 448,500 euros shows a commitment to sport policy. The municipal support for Olympiastützpunkt Leipzig (OSP) for the amount of 224,000 euros ensures mixed financing for coaches in the main sports.
